Want your child to study abroad? You're surely one of those who desire a quality education for your child.

According to a recent report, the International student market in the UK is worth more than 17 Billion dollars and Nigeria is the 3rd largest country after China and India that’s

sending a large number of its students to the UK.

The number of Nigerians who subscribe to foreign education is undoubtedly on the increase. Despite the increase in the number of privately owned Universities and other higher institutions across the country, thousands of students continue to seek admissions in foreign schools in the US, UK and other countries.

Most parents seem to be certain that foreign education would afford their children a better standard of education - which would better their lot in life; a standard which cannot be attained in the institutions at home. In this article, we have summarized 4 reasons you may want to consider foreign higher education for your dear child.

Please enjoy!

Foreign Education Helps Students Understand Diversity

Schooling abroad exposes students to people of different cultures and backgrounds.

In some schools abroad, students from almost all parts of the world are well represented in the different departments, thereby, providing students with the opportunity to understand and appreciate the heterogeneous nature of human society.

Some students are able to learn additional languages while schooling, while others make it a goal to explore foreign cultures and ways of life of other people.

All of these avenues afford foreign students the opportunity to widen their horizons and become better individuals. Foreign Education Broadens Children’s World View Resulting from exposure to various peoples; cultures, cuisines, languages and experiences, foreign students’ world view usually undergo significant changes.

The totality of their beliefs about reality and life is broadened and their philosophy of life is greatly influenced. Exposure to the way the s of life of different people usually broadens foreign students’ horizons and this might, in turn, reflect on their thoughts and decision-making processes. Such foreign exposure engenders confidence and assertiveness in foreign students that their counterparts at home may not have.

So, your child would definitely imbibe certain foreign cultures and ways of life during his study abroad. We hope this would not erode his/her rich indigenous culture! Foreign Education Teaches Students Self-Reliance The boarding school experience helps students learn how to survive in an environment without their parents.

But foreign education does more; it provides a unique opportunity for students to learn how to be self-reliant and make the right decisions independently.

When children are far away from home, they learn how to do things by themselves and find their way out of whatever circumstances they find themselves. This ability to make wise decisions and be self-reliant would affect their lives positively in other endeavours in life.

Foreign Education Enhances Good Communication Skills

The ability to communicate more fluently and effectively is one of the advantages of foreign education. For example, as a result of communicating constantly with foreign students whose mother tongue is the English language, a foreign student tends to learn how to articulate himself or herself better in the English language.

This is a result of the influence of the original users of the language. The ability to express oneself effectively in the English language is highly valued and appreciated back home; good communication skills would likely interest an employer before other things.

Why Foreign Education Might NOT Be Your Best Option

Although there are a thousand and one reasons why foreign education might be your best option, we’ve also highlighted two reasons you may want to rethink especially if you're a middle-income earning parent.

Foreign Education Is Expensive Compared with all public schools and some private schools in Nigeria, foreign education is very expensive. Take, for example, a $25,000 worth of post-graduate programme for one student in the United States can pay for more than five students’ post-graduate courses in Nigeria.

For parents considering foreign education, it is advisable that they count the cost of foreign education to the very last so that their children would not get stranded in the middle of the programme.

Some parents may mistake the fee for a school session for that of the whole school year and this may cause unnecessary financial constraints. Parents need to make sure that they are armed with sufficient information about the financial implication of schooling abroad before making that ultimate decision.

Foreign Education Does Not Guarantee Automatic Employment Gone are the days when foreign students upon their return home were absorbed by choice companies automatically.

Of course, employers still value foreign-trained candidates but due to the limited availability of jobs, employers like to employ candidates who would perform best in any work environment, foreign-trained or not.

Some organizations may not even want to employ foreign trained because they may not be able to afford their salaries. So, a foreign accent and a foreign university certificate no longer suffice these days.
