How to help your child get more organized at school

Naturally, some kids love to organize their work, keep their spaces clean and get their tasks done completely and on time. If you have such a kid, lucky you.

However, most kids are a little

less orderly. They forget their textbooks at school, leave their homework uncompleted and find it difficult to do house chores.

Whether your child is naturally an organized person or not, organizational skill is an important ability that will help your child succeed in school and in life. Most parents want their children to become more organized and efficient.

But the challenge for many parents is that they don’t know just how to help their child develop organizational skills at home and in school. If you are such a parent, we've got you covered.

You will find in this article some simple and practicable tips that can help you train your child to become orderly even as they grow into responsible young adults.

How to help your child get more organized at school and at home

Create simple daily routines for your child

Daily routines help your child to know what tasks to expect each day. It creates a sense of purpose and a sense of purpose, in turn, will help your child get needed motivation to get their tasks done and completed on time.

Working with a daily routine also reduces the back and forth between parents and kids about every single task since the tasks would have already been pre-agreed upon by all the stakeholders in the family - including the young ones.

Break tasks into manageable steps

If there is one thing that will help your child learn to become more organized, it is simply breaking tasks into small bite chunks.

For example, if your child has the task of cleaning their room, you can help them break that into simple achievable steps. First of all, they must arrange the clothes on the bed. Next, they must arrange the bed. And lastly, they must arrange the items on the dressing mirror table.

Breaking tasks into simple steps like these make your child feel good when they get any step of the task done and give them enough motivation to complete the other steps of their work.

List tasks into checklists or to-do list

Similar to breaking tasks down, creating a list of tasks or a checklist works for kids as much as it does for adults. Once a child knows all the steps involved to complete a particular task, you can help them add the small tasks to a to-do list.

This could include their school works and regular house chores.

Tell your child to keep their to-do list handy or keep them somewhere visible in the house like on the fridge. This way, they can easily be reminded of what tasks are to be done next.

Teach kids time management skills

Help your child to learn how to use the calendar. Let them take notes on assignment deadlines or due dates on the calendar. Help them set reminders for other important activities on the calendar too.

It is also a good practice to encourage your child to time their assignment and chores to see how long it takes to do a task so that they can learn how to allocate time for tasks. This will help stay on a particular task for the allocated time and things are done more orderly.

Create a workspace for kids at home

One habit that has been found very useful in helping kids to be organized is creating a special space for work for each child at home. Even if it’s the kitchen cabinet or a small space at the dining table, make sure you dedicate a space where your child will do their assignments, read and get other activities done.

Have a designated time for study

Don’t just create a designated space for study, create a designated time for study too. Studies show that maintaining a routine time for study help kids stay focused.

Your child will benefit more when they know that a certain time every day is reserved for studying and doing homework.

Help kids learn to sleep early

It’s also important to give the kids enough time to rest after school and do what they love. So, study time should not be immediately after school hours if it would be effective.

Again, avoid allowing your kids to stay awake till late into the night. Keeping late nights could eat into your child’s sleep and make them become less productive which will also affect their orderliness.

Do chores together

Cooking involves a lot of planning, measuring, sorting ingredients, and time management. Involving your child - male or female - in cooking is a subtle yet, effective way of teaching them to be more orderly. Apart from that, they benefit by learning the most important skill there is - cooking.

Involving your child in meal planning, creating a shopping list and the actual cooking will all be useful to the kid.

Lead by example

Most importantly, you need to be intentional in showing your child how to be more effective and finish their tasks without being distracted.

First, be orderly. Second, show your child how you get things done, be it work at the office or house chores. Let them see how you reward yourself once you are able to successfully finish a task after many sacrifices.

Continue to encourage your child to cultivate this habit and don’t hesitate to let them know the benefits that come with it.

While you try your best to help your child get more orderly and get things done, don’t be in a hurry.

Be assured that they are learning even when you can’t visibly see such improvement. Don’t be fast to give up on your child. Sooner or later, all your efforts will pay off as you raise a responsible and well-organized young adult.
