What are the requirements to study abroad from Nigeria?


Recent data released by the Home Office of the United Kingdom revealed that the number of study visas released to Nigerians increased by 222.8% to 65,929 in June 2022 from 20,427 in the same period of 2021.


This is the data for the

United Kingdom alone. More Nigerians have in recent times also opted to study in other study destinations like Canada, the US and even China.


There is a wide range of reasons that Nigerians choose to study in these countries outside Nigeria. From the stable academic calendar to the prospect of learning new skills and even securing a job after study, the reasons are quite a handful. However, a lot of young Nigerians who love to study abroad do not have the needed information about the requirements needed to study abroad.


This article explores the requirements to study abroad from Nigeria and other information you need to know before you apply for your student visa in any country of your choice.

Before we explore the requirements to study abroad from Nigeria, what are the top International study destinations for Nigerian students?

United Kingdom

In 2022 alone, 65,929 Nigerians were granted Visas to study in the UK. This shows that the United Kingdom is arguably one of the preferred study destinations abroad for Nigerians.


This trend is likely to continue for a few years to come. Again, the post-study job opportunity after a study programme remains one of the reasons Nigerians choose to study in the UK.


The United States

The number of Nigerian students enrolled in the United States (US) tertiary institutions increased by 12.3 percent in the 2021/2022 academic year when compared to the previous 2020/2021 session.


According to the figure released by the United States Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria in its Open Door report, 14,438 Nigerians enrolled for education in the US in 2022.

The US remains the world’s most popular study destination for international students, closely followed by the United Kingdom.


Canada

According to recent Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada data, the number of new study permits for Nigeria increased by 30.3 percent in 2022 to 13,745 from 10,550 in 2020, making it the ninth most popular source country for international students. This is the highest in 22 years.


In recent times Canada has proven to be the study destination choice for many Nigerians. The opportunity to secure a job in a welcoming country is one of the reasons many Nigerians consider before making their visa application.


Norway

Many Nigerians also prefer Norway as their education destination of choice. The country has one of the best education systems in the world and is open to accepting international students to their universities.


Despite being a small country, it is known for quality education, a low crime rate and a high standard of living around.

Norwegian higher institutions offer world-class education, seasoned professionals and a conducive learning environment.


Germany

Many Nigerians also choose the European country of Germany as their preferred destination of study.

Tuition at the Ph.D. and undergraduate levels is entirely free of charge.


While obtaining a degree in Germany, international students are permitted to work for a limited amount of hours. They can earn up to €450 in a month.


The Technical University of Munich (TUM), Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) Munich, Heidelberg University, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), and Humboldt University Berlin are among Germany’s top five universities.


Requirements to study abroad from Nigeria

There are different application requirements to study abroad specific to different countries and schools of choice. So, the requirements to study abroad from Nigeria for you would depend on the study destination that you have chosen be it the UK, US, Canada or China.


But as a rule of thumb, there are some general requirements that cut across countries. Make sure to complete these requirements no matter the destination of study that you have chosen:


Language Proficiency Certificate: A written certificate attesting to language proficiency. Proofs of language proficiency include, for example, Language certificate (the proof of proficiency required by most universities) Proof of participation at a completed or currently-attended language course (only rarely accepted as proof of proficiency).


International Passport

Secondary School Transcript or University Transcript

At Least Two Recommendation Letters: These can be academic or professional

Bank Statements

Birth Certificate

WAEC/SSCE Exam Results

A Valid Student Visa for the Foreign Country

Healthcare Documents such as Insurance etc.
