History of Immaculate Conception College

Immaculate Conception College (ICC), Benin, has witnessed three phases in the management history of the College. The first phase of management was when the Catholic Mission first established the College. The second phase corresponds with the period when Government seized and took over all private and mission schools, and turned them into public schools. The third phase is the return by the Government of Edo State of ICC to the Catholic Mission the original owner of the College. FIRST PHASE: The Catholic Bishop of Benin City, His Lordship, Bishop Patrick Joseph Kelly established ICC in 1944 with Rev. Andrew O’Rouke SMA as the First Principal of the College. The College started with only 30 students (at the present site of St. Paul Minor Seminary) until 1954 when it was approved as a Secondary School. Until then, the students had to go to St. Patrick College, Asaba to complete their Secondary Education. In 1966, the first batch of Higher School Certificate (HSC) students was admitted. Due to high quality of staff and the dedication of each successive Rev. Principal, the College became popular as a center for excellence, morals, teaching and learning. It was a preparatory ground for University Education within and outside Nigeria. SECOND PHASE: The second phase in the management history of ICC was the take-over of all Missionary Schools by Government in 1972. The first Principal was Mr. R.O. Asenime followed by Dr. Joseph Itotoh in 1975. The College gradually expanded in student population and eventually became four Colleges in the same premises with over 8,000 students and four Principals. This period of take-over of ICC by Government was characterized by the general decadence in morals and an upsurge in anti-social behaviours. Learning and teaching deteriorated because of the rowdy class size, in most cases more than 100 students were in a class. Unfortunately, the buildings erected by the Catholic Mission were regrettably vandalized and all the hostels were converted to classrooms. Renovation and maintenance were noticeably missing during that era. It was against this background of deplorable state of affairs that the Edo State Government decided to return the College to the Catholic Mission, the Original Owner of ICC, Benin City. THIRD PHASE: The third phase in the management history of ICC Benin is the return of the College by Edo State Government under Chief Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion, to the Catholic Mission on the 30th of April 2004. Empty buildings were returned because the Government had removed all the teachers and students, the seats and desks as well as the laboratory equipment and materials to the host schools. The buildings had been vandalized; there were no doors and windows, the walls had been pulled down in most cases, and all the roofs were either not there or were leaking and hardly habitable. This was the horrible state of the College when it was returned by the Government to the Catholic Mission. Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Isaac Prest Ebeigbe was appointed the first Principal of the College by June, 2004. In January, 2005, Very Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Cyril I. Ofoegbu was appointed taking over the realm of affairs in the College. During this period the College witnessed a complete revert to the old discipline that placed the institution first among equals. Reverting to the old discipline and maintaining the mission and vision of Catholic Mission Schools, the College once again was restored to its pride of place that was once lost during the period the Government took over schools. Upon the death of Rev. Fr. Cyril Ofoegbu the second Principal, the current Principal Very Rev. Fr. Anthony Oshiowekhai Ekhaisomi, Ph.D who was between 2005 and 2011 the Vice Principal of the College was appointed the substantive Principal. The role the then Archbishop, Most Rev. (Dr.) Patrick Ebosele Ekpu played by making funds immediately available for making seats, desks and rehabilitating the buildings as well as making beds in the hostels, was very reassuring and commendable. The current Archbishop of Benin City and Proprietor of the College, Most Rev. Dr. Augustine Obiora Akubeze is committed to making Immaculate Conception College (ICC) one of the best Colleges in Nigeria.
