At the inception of the Catholic Diocese of Abeokuta in 1998, the need to have a secondary school that will provide quality education to the people of Abeokuta was a pressing one! At that time, the three Catholic Secondary Schools in Abeokuta originally owned by the Catholic Mission but forcefully taken over by the Military Government in 1976 had become mere shadows of their past existence and records. St. Bernadette Nursery & Primary School, Onikolobo was yearning for a school (secondary) that would complement its efforts on the many students it was graduating every year who were being assimilated into life in the public schools with most of the values inculcated in them fizzled away. The then bishop of the diocese, Most Revd,AlfredAdewale Martins (now the Archbishop of the Metropolitan see of Lagos) formed a think tank committee that brainstormed and helped to nurture the idea into a reality and thus Sacred Heart Catholic College was established in January 1999. The formal inauguration of the school however, took place on 11th October 1999 with a concelebrated Mass that was presided over by the bishop with many of the priests in attendance. Also in attendance were representatives of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur who have been contacted to assist in the wholistic formation of the young minds in line with Catholic Education Policy. At inception, Chief Anthony Akanbi Idowu, a veteran teacher, an accomplished school administrator and a staunch Catholic with a pedigree of serving as pioneer principals was appointed its principal. Sr. Isi Okoebor, SND and Sr. Martina Akhibi, SND served as the pioneer vice principal and bursar respectively. There were also nine other permanent staff, three part time teachers and few non-teaching staff that began the great work of putting the infant school on its feet. To the glory of God, some of these pioneer staff were in the service of the school twenty-one years after. The schools enrolment at take-off was 140 students made up of 85 boys and 65 girls which were put into five arms. The schools population has continued to grow since then. Presently, the school has over nine hundred students in the junior and senior schools. The staff strength that was just twenty-eight in 1999 has soared to over a hundred excluding corp members and students on teaching practice. Though only a mixed junior secondary school at inception, it has grown to become a full-fledged mixed secondary school, and has graduated over fifteen sets of senior secondary school leavers who are making the school proud in their choice of disciplines and in the various Universities; home and abroad where they are proving their mettle. With the ordination of Most Rev. Peter Kayode Odetoyinbo, Sacred Heart now has a new Proprietor, the new Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Abeokuta. The school continues to grow with the effort of the teachers, P.T.A, and the management team on ground. The current Principal of the school, is Mrs Ezeofor C.J, the Vice Principal is Rev. Sr Jacinta Opara. The Administrator of the School is Rev. Fr. Patrick Oke. God bless SHCC
