Mate was founded in order to develop children academically, morally and spiritually. Also she was founded on the basis that young children should be helped to develop their mathematical ability. The idea was that if children from the initial stage are given strong and sound footing in mathematics and English they would always love these subjects and do well in them, all through their educational career.

Mate started with four pupils and the headmistress office was a store created under the steps in the only building by then which was decked. One side of it was used as our (the headmistress’s family) dwelling house, while the other side contained the classroom (3 Classes) and the boys and girls hostels. The school had three teachers and the headmistress. The existing classes where nursery one and two and the special coaching class. This special coaching class consisted of children who did not pass their entrance examination into secondary schools. Glory be to God that all the people in the class that year passed the Lagos state common entrance examination. The following year which was 1974the decked building was completed and in 1975 work started on the boarding house block. During 1974/75 session, the total number of pupils increased to one hundred and eight (108)
